    Patriots Day (UHD Blu-ray) review

    Plot
Based upon the dramatic real-life manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombers, this powerful action-thriller follows Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) as he joins brave survivors, first responders, and investigators in a race against time to find the bombers before they strike again. Directed by Peter Berg and featuring a stellar cast, Patriots Day is a stirring tribute to the Boston community’s strength and courage in the face of adversity.

    My Thoughts
I’ve become a very big fan of Peter Berg’s work and this is another film that deserves recognition for stellar directing and getting the most out of your cast. The film deals with the 2013 bombing at the Boston Marathon and how the city reacted to the tragedy. The writers, which included Berg, take some liberties with how they depict the home life of the terrorists and the relationship with one of their wives and assumes that she knew what was going to happen, even though she has not been convicted of any crime as of today—which is a complete travesty since the bombs were made in her home. Regardless, this is a very good film that will have you on the edge of your seat.

I wasn’t blown away by the 4K presentation because it was mastered much too dim necessitating me to use my projector with the lamp on high power in order to brighten it up a bit, which is something I don’t like to do because of fan noise and shortening the life of the bulb. Fortunately, this isn’t a common problem and has only happened on a few of the 80 or so discs I’ve reviewed. The audio track has its moments, especially with discrete sounds such as radio chatter, helicopters, and gunshots ringing through the room from various speakers.

    4K UHD
    Video 8/10 (HEVC)
    Audio 9/10 (DTS:X)

    Blu-ray
    Video 4.5/5 (AVC)
    Audio 4.5/5 (DTS:X)

    Special Features:
    · “Boston Strong: True Stories of Courage”
    · “The Boston Bond: Recounting the Tale”
    · “The Real Patriots: The Local Heroes’ Stories”
    · “The Cast Remembers”
    · “Actors Meet Real-Life Counterparts: A 2-Part Series”
    · “Researching the Day”
    · UHD, Blu-ray, and UV Digital Copy

    Conclusion
This is a compelling drama/thriller about a real-life event that happened just four short years ago and the events surround it were still fresh in my mind when I sat down to watch the film. Knowing out the events played out didn’t ruin it for me one bit. In fact, I was impressed by how closely Berg stuck to the actual events with only the occasional Hollywood moment, such as Wahlberg’s character wasn’t real—he was a culmination of several Boston police officers, which is understandable. Definitely check this one out. Highly recommended.
