My Samsung Plasma Does a Better Job of 3D Conversion Than ILM Did

Sorry I've been so absent around these parts as of late! This new site redo has been kicking my ass. I promise we'll return you to your regularly scheduled Wookiee soon.

Speaking of Wookiees, I thought you guys might dig a little blog I wrote yesterday about my experiences with Star Wars: Episode I in 3D this weekend. The title kinda gives my thoughts on the 3D conversion away: it sucked. Oddly enough, my Samsung plasma did a better job.

Clicky for more thoughts on the matter.

Very interesting results Dennis. I don't currently have a 3D display but if I did, I wouldn't expect it to convert a 2D film better than big Hollywood. I wonder if the 2D to 3D effect would be deeper if you had a 90"+ front projection.

I didn't exactly love Episode I and wasn't going out to see it in 3D, but your findings are surprising.

Well, I moved up to about 5.5 feet away from my 58" for the 3D test, so it was pretty field-of-view filling. I honestly think the flatness of Episode I's image just doesn't leave much for any 3D conversion process to work with.

Maybe you should open your own effects house here in Hollywood?
