Did Robin Thicke Steal Marvin Gaye's Got To Give It Up? You Tell Me
I tried to post this thread yesterday and it didn't post correctly. So here it goes again..
News came out that Thicke, is suing the publishing company that represents Gaye and other artists like Funkadelic because people are saying that Thicke stole the song. Why HE'S suing them - I have no idea? I would assume they are waiting for his HUGE song to run its course before they sue to try to get money back.
Thicke was on Howard Stern and said that a) he didn't create the beat and b) that the song is a tribute to Marvin Gaye who is a hero of his.
We talked a lot about these topics in music school at USC. Here's my take:
• The beat is close but has a modicum of creativity which is the standard in court.
• The tempo is much faster with Thicke's song.
• There is no Whitesnake without Led Zeppelin. There is no Led Zeppelin without say Blind Lemon Jefferson. Does Thicke rip off entire lines like "Squeeze my lemon till the juice runs down my leg?". I don't hear it. Once again its a tribute.
What is your take?
Is the song a rip off?
Can you forgive any issues because of the video?
Here are both versions below including the NSFW video. I couldn't help but to post it again.
