Prince's Estate Files to Block New Release

April 21st will mark one year since the death of the artist known as Prince. A lot is still unknown about his death and it is still making the news today.

As with David Bowie, Prince left previously unreleased music that may make it to fans, after his death. Prosoundnetwork reports that Prince's producer/sound engineer Ian Boxill is in possession of several tracks that Prince recorded between 2006 and 2008. He had planned to release six tracks as an EP entitled Deliverance as a download on April 21, and then physical media on June 2.

The estate of Prince says that Boxill has no rights to release those tracks and is seeking to block the EP and civil damages.

The lawsuit values the six tracks—five songs and an extended mix—at more than $75,000, and is seeking civil liability for theft. It is alleged that Boxill signed a confidentiality agreement that decreed all tracks they worked on together would “remain Prince's sole and exclusive property." Boxill has shared the tracks with third-parties—in this case, the label RMA (Rogue Music Alliance)—and reportedly refuses to return the masters, thus violating the agreement according to the parties behind the lawsuit.

The lawsuit also alleges that by signing the confidentiality agreement, Boxill waived his right to be interviewed or write about his work with Prince. However, in a press statement from RMA, Boxill noted, “Prince once told me that he would go to bed every night thinking of ways to bypass major labels and get his music directly to the public. When considering how to release this important work, we decided to go independent because that's what Prince would have wanted."
I suppose we will have to wait and see what becomes of this lawsuit. Any big Prince fans?

Hey Prince - you moron... hire a lawyer to do a will and trust.

I have nothing but I've got one.

I love the guy but this is SO STUPID. So arrogant. Much like not being able to look him in the eye or not hiring a record producer for the last 20 years of his life.

The download is already released. Haven't heard it yet. The first decade of this century was probably Prince's lowest point as far as creativity, so I'm not holding my breath for a great release..........

I take back my speculation. It's actually pretty good. Prince fans may want to grab this if you can find it.

Last I heard, they successfully blocked the release. Where did you find it?

I heard a 50-second teaser of the title track, "Deliverance". What I heard sounded pretty good.
