    Wheel Linear Tracking Turntable

It's a great time to be an AV enthusiast. Not only is AV equipment getting better and less expensive, there is also a growing number of interesting products hitting the market from small start-ups.

Speaking of small start-ups, Wheel is new linear tracking turntable that has a very different look, even from other linear trackers. It's basically as the name implies, a wheel or platter that can either sit flat or be mounted vertically.

The magic behind Wheel is that the tone arm and stylus sit under the record, playing the underside rather than the top. The unit uses a modified AudioTechnica AT95E cartridge and stylus, mounted on a custom mahogany tonearm. As you can see above, the look of this turntable is very clean and minimalist to the extreme. If you noticed, there are no visible controls. Everything is controlled by the spindle in the center, called the stick. The stick functions as Wheel's on/off, play/pause, volume, even next or previous track. Turning the stick controls the volume of the included 3.5mm headphone jack located on the back.

Wheel uses a heavy aluminum platter that is belt-driven and controlled to spin at 33 1/3 rpm. I did not see any mention of a 45rpm setting but this can easily be achieved by variable power supplies that are currently available specifically for turntables. The outer part is your choice of walnut, cherry, mahogany, or Indian rosewood.

Wheel is currently more than funded on Kickstarter and is expected to start shipping in October. Retail looks to be around $850 when it officially hits the market. However, you can still grab one for around $600 until they sell out or the campaign ends.
