    Julieta (Blu-ray) review

    Plot
In Julieta, critically acclaimed director Pedro Almodóvar tells a story about a mother’s struggle to survive uncertainty and come to grips with fate.

Julieta lives in Madrid with her daughter Antia. They are both in pain over the loss of Xoan, Antia’s father and Julieta’s husband. But sometimes grief doesn’t bring people closer, it drives them apart. When Antia turns eighteen, she abandons her mother without a word of explanation. Julieta is haunted by the mystery of this loss and it pervades everything in her life. Her struggle and obsession lead to self-discovery and surprising revelations.

    My Thoughts
The story is adapted from three different short stories from Alice Munroe that deal with guilt, betrayal, and looking back at the past and wondering how things could have been different if certain decisions were changed. The timelines of the past and present interchange seamlessly and director Pedro Almodóvar does a stellar job creating such a cohesive and interesting story.

    Blu-ray Video (4.5/5)

    Audio 4.5/5 (DTS-MA 5.1) – Spanish with English subtitles

    Special Features:
    · “Portait of Julieta” Featurette
    · “Celebrating Director Pedro Almodóvar” Featurette

    Conclusion
Some people are turned off by foreign films and don’t like subtitles, but I’m not one of those people. This is an excellent story that features outstanding performances and while melodramatic movies generally turn me off, Almodóvar never veers too deep into this aspect to make it unbelievable. Highly recommended.

Almodóvar always does a great job of expressing how hard life can be and doesn't apologize for it. Strong female leads are another great trademark. Thanks for reviewing this one Dave.
