Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star in a high-stakes adventure about two passengers, Aurora and Jim, onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As they try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they discover that the ship itself is in grave danger. With the lives of 5,000 sleeping passengers at stake, only Jim and Aurora can save them all.

    My Thoughts
Sci-fi concept, Jennifer Lawrence, and 4K, sign me up! Despite its tepid reviews during its theatrical run, this was a movie that I was looking forward to seeing. When I found out it was coming in 4K along with a Dolby Atmos track, it became a must see.

I went in with low expectations and found it to be quite good although there are definitely some flaws. The premise is well orchestrated and Pratt’s character is put in a very tough situation in which he must make a choice—to do or not to do (no spoilers). Regardless, I found it quite entertaining and it’s something that I could watch again.

As has been the norm with Sony, the 4K packaging is amazing and includes not only the 4K release, but a Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, as well as an UV Digital Copy—sorry, no DVD. The presentation is excellent all around, but watching in 4K is the best of the three (or four if you include streaming it). The film was shot with 6.5k cameras and finished in 4K and it certainly shows in the video encode. Other than one instance of some shimmering in the background at the 57-minute mark, which wasn’t on the Blu-ray, this is a near-flawless encode. The Dolby Atmos track is outstanding and includes a plethora of overhead effects, foundation-shaking bass, and a great score.

    Video 9.5/10 (HEVC)
Audio 10/10 (Dolby Atmos) – UHD

    Video 5/5 (AVC)
    Audio 4.5/5 (DTS-MA 5.1)

    3D Blu-ray
    Video 4/5 (MVC)
    Audio 4.5/5 (DTS-MA 5.1)

    Special Features:
    · Deleted Scenes
    · “Space on Screen: The Visual Effects of Passengers
    · Outtakes from the Set
    · “Casting the Passengers”
    · Creating the Avalon”
    · “On Set with Chris Pratt”
    · Book Your Passage

It’s hard to explain the “twist” in the movie without including spoilers, but I can see how some would take issue with the film. Sure, it’s a bit cheesy at times, especially with the romance angle, but the moral questions that are brought up certainly make you think “What would I do if in a similar circumstance?” Regardless, I really like both of the stars and found their chemistry genuine and could see myself watching the movie in the future due to the special effects, fabulous video encodes, and raucous Atmos track. Highly recommended.

I was excited for this one, as I love these types of movies. Sci-fi, space travel, etc. Then the middling reviews came in and I lowered my expectations. even still, i didn't like it.

It was very boring and bland. The trailers made it seem like an exciting, almost adventure, movie. "Why were they woken?!?!" it said. And it's not really even about that. Or, if it is, it's a really lame 'revelation'.

Hard not to say more without spoilers, but don't expect too much. FWIW I also thought the two leads didn't have much chemistry. I'm also kinda sick of J. Lawrence after it felt like she sleepwalked through X-Men: Apocolypse. And Pratt needs other talented actors to play off. He's in this solo for quite awhile and just didn't command my attention.

For a *somewhat* similar premise I HIGHLY recommend Moon with Sam Rockwell. Very low budget, but amazing. It should be shown in every acting class. They way he handles his role is very impressive. And did I mention that (with very little exception) he's the only actor in it?
