Set in 1979 Santa Barbara, 20th Century Women follows Dorothea (Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie (Zumann), at a time brimming with cultural change. When Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women — Abbie (Gerwig), a punk artist boarding in Fields’s home; and Julie (Elle Fanning), savvy teenage neighbor. Along with William (Crudup), a bohemian handyman who rooms in Dorothea’s house, they form a makeshift family forms that inspires them for the rest of their lives.

    My Thoughts
On the plus side, this film really captures the era quite well and transports you back to the late 70’s. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get into this movie one bit. The single mom is looking to get help in raising her withdrawn son, but I didn’t find that the story flowed very well and each interaction was akin to a SNL skit, although they are at least taken much more seriously. The biggest issue is that I couldn’t relate, or actually like, any of the characters, which makes watching the movie somewhat difficult.

    Blu-ray Video (4/5)

    Audio 4/5 (DTS-MA 5.1)

    Special Features:
    · Making 20th Century Women
    · 20th Century Women Cast
    · Audio Commentary
    · UV Digital Copy

Maybe I wasn’t in the mood for a character driven drama, but I just couldn’t connect with this one despite both audience and critical praise (per Maybe you’ll feel differently, but I’d definitely rent it first.
