The Mummy (2017) (UHD Blu-ray) review

Thought safely entombed deep beneath the desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella, Star Trek Beyond, Kingsman: The Secret Service) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day. Her malevolence has grown over millennia and with it come terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sands of the Middle East through modern-day London, The Mummy balances wonder, thrills, and imagination.

    My Thoughts
Even though the reviewers skewered this at the box office, it did pull in a somewhat respectable $80 million domestic and over $327 million internationally, making it a profitable venture for Universal’s reboot of the franchise. As someone who actually liked the original trilogy, I was somewhat perplexed that this was resurrected with Tom Cruise as the lead, but who am I to judge. All told, it isn’t a very good movie. The humor falls pretty flat, the romance angle has little to no chemistry, and the screenplay is very inconsistent. Throw in the twist with Russell Crowe’s character and I have a hard time seeing what the filmmakers were trying to accomplish here.

It was better than I thought it would be, but still not very good. The A/V quality is solid and while I generally don’t like horror films, this one is pretty tame and not too scary. Some of the dialog is laughable and the ending sets up a sequel that may never happen, but given the foreign box office, it may be profitable to go that route for Universal.

I'm going to give it a rent. If nothing else it will be a good AV ride.

    Thanks, David.
