Game of Thrones: Season 7 (Blu-ray) review

    Plot
Daenerys Targaryen has finally set sail for Westeros with her armies, dragons and new Hand of the Queen, Tyrion Lannister. Jon Snow has been named King in the North after defeating Ramsay Bolton in the Battle of the Bastards and returning Winterfell to House Stark. In King’s Landing, Cersei Lannister has seized the Iron Throne by incinerating the High Sparrow, his followers and her rivals in the Sept of Baelor. But as old alliances fracture and new ones emerge, an army of dead men marches on the Wall, threatening to end the game of thrones forever.

    My Thoughts
I wasn’t overly impressed with this show the first time I saw it and my wife hated it immensely—which probably affected my view because it’s hard to enjoy something when you have someone jabbering throughout an episode of what they don’t like about it! Thankfully, we gave it another shot a couple of years later and my wife became a convert after viewing the second season and we’ve been fans ever since.

I’ve now watched every episode in the series at least twice—and in some cases, more than twice—and it’s a show that gets better the more you throw yourself into the story. Like reading a good book, the first time through gives you the gist of what’s going on, but when you view it for the second time you pick up on little tidbits that flew straight over your head on the first viewing. That is certainly the case with Season 7, where the second time through I was able to digest more of the subtleties to the story and it just makes me want to see the final season even more.

Who will win the Iron Throne? Can man defeat the White Walkers or is the time of man at an end? Can the alliances made during season 7 hold? Will good win over evil? And finally, will Daenerys’ dragons be the ultimate weapon or the ultimate curse upon the realm?

    Conclusion
George R.R. Martin was supposed to be finished with the last two books of the series by now, but alas the TV show moved beyond his prose in season 6. Fortunately, the show-runners consulted Martin and he must have approved of where the show is heading. In many ways, I think the storytelling is more succinct these past two seasons although I’ve read many complaints online that time is moving too fast in that characters jump around the seven kingdoms too quickly. I’m not as critical and assume weeks can go by at a time when the story jumps to the next segment, but that’s just me. Regardless, if you’re a fan of the show you definitely want to pick this up. It’s a show that can be watched multiple times and will sit proudly in my collection until the day I die or when the series gets released on UHD Blu-ray—whichever comes first. Highly recommended!

I have such mixed feelings about Season 7, which I haven't watched yet.

I am a huge GOT fan and have read every book before seeing each HBO season. However, this isn't possible since as you mentioned, Martin is too busy doing promotional tours to finish the book series.

I will break with tradition and watch this on Blu-ray when it hits the market. I am dying to know the details, although I think I know the direction that this season is headed. I have tried my best to avoid the Internet spoilers and threatened my brother-in-law not to speak of the show.

    Thanks for the review, David.

I just want you guys to read the books and read your reactions to the plot and character changes. Many of them are not that big of a deal. However, there are a few that had me saying, "That's not what happened" during the show.

My wife just looks over at me with a blank stare.

I'm almost done with book 2 now. Hoping to get the rest of the books for Christmas.

Now just imagine that you hadn't watched the HBO series and were introduced to all those characters in the first few chapters. It was a bit of a challenge for me, at the very beginning. I'm glad that I stuck with it.
