    Outlander: Season Three (Blu-ray) review

The third season of Outlander picks up right after Claire travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948. Now pregnant, she struggles with the fallout of her sudden reappearance and its effect on her marriage to her first husband, Frank. Meanwhile, in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire. As the years pass, Jamie and Claire attempt to make lives apart from one another, each haunted by the memory of their lost love. Separated by continents and centuries, Claire and Jamie must find their way back to each other. As always, adversity, mystery, and adventure await them, and the question remains: When they find each other, will they be the same people who parted at the standing stones, all those years ago?

    My Thoughts
The third season is based upon Voyager, the third of eight books in Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling Outlander series. While the Starz series hasn’t received the acclaim of HBO’s Game of Thrones, the show is wildly popular, particularly with female audiences, and there’s enough action in the show to keep the men interested (plus a fair share of sex and violence). My wife and daughter are huge fans of the books and have come to adore the show.

The casting is excellent, especially with the two leads, and this season has a lot of intrigue and mystery along with some time travel that can make your head spin trying to figure things out. Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore has done a great job adapting the books and being able to take his time telling the story really allows the characters to grow and evolve versus the standard adaption into a two-hour film.

I enjoyed the third season, but felt the narrative was a bit rushed, which isn’t surprising given the thickness of the book. Granted, if you haven’t read the book you won’t realize anything is missing and the season ends setting things up perfectly for the fourth, which will hit Starz in Fall of 2018. I can’t wait!

While this hasn’t quite grabbed me like Game of Thrones, it’s nearly on the same level when it comes to its production value and acting. Granted, there aren’t any dragons but the time travel aspect is definitely interesting and Moore has done a fabulous job of setting up the next season, which should be incredibly fun with the addition of some new characters. Highly recommended.
