You know that I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter books and the movies weren't half bad. However, I thought that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, was just OK.

I'm with you, this one looks more interesting based on this trailer.

Am I wrong or is Depp the first American to play a major character from the Harry Potter world?

I want to see Grindelwald break out a bottle of rum and say "It's a pirate's life for me love", to Dumbledore.

Depp could just be the first American born Potter character, possibly because he has lived in Europe for a very long time and seems to periodically delight in trashing Americans and American values. Still, he should be an improvement on Colin Farrell's Grindelwald so long as he doesn't go with the Willie Wonka closet pedophile route.

Oh, I fully believe Depp will do the character justice given a good script. Grindelwald seems to be a character who's both genius and more than a little disturbed.

Sounds just like Depp to me.
