    First Man (UHD Blu-ray) review

    Name: first man.jpg

    Plot
Based on the book First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong by James R. Hansen and from visionary filmmaker Damien Chazelle, FIRST MAN is the riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight. A visceral and intimate account told from Armstrong’s perspective, the film explores the triumphs and the cost—on Armstrong, his family, his colleagues and the nation itself—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

    My Thoughts
I really wanted to get out to theaters to see this film in order to fully appreciate the excellent cinematography, but just couldn’t find the time. Regardless, this is one of the best movies of 2018 and is one of the first reference discs of 2019 to hit UHD (and Blu-ray). Gosling does a great job portraying Armstrong and you get to know the man like never before. The narrative shows his home life and the stresses he had to go through to be the first man to walk on the moon.

    Video 9.5/10 (MVC)

    Audio 10/10 (Dolby Atmos)

    Special Features:

    • Deleted Scenes
    • Shooting for the Moon
    • Preparing to Launch
    • Giant Leap in One Small Step
    • Mission Gone Wrong
    • Putting You in the Seat
    • Recreating the Moon Landing
    • Shooting at NASA
    • Astronaut Training
    • Feature Commentary
    • Blu-ray + Digital Copy

    Conclusion
This is a very serious drama that intersperses some great scenes of our early space program and their rush to beat the Russians to the moon. Most of the film is concentrated on Armstrong and how he earned his way onto Apollo 11, but you also see some of the tragedies he faced along the way. The cinematography is amazing, particularly the IMAX scenes when they land on the moon, and the special effects are amazing. In fact, watch every bonus feature to see how the director used a giant LCD screen as a backdrop instead of greenscreen to shoot some of the sequences in the film. The realism this provides really came out in the acting. If you’re a fan of the space program, definitely pick this one up. Highly recommended.

Barry, wait for the 4K projector before watching this (although you could always watch it again ). The space sequences and the moon landing are amazing!

I won't get mine until sometime in April, so count your blessings! If they would have been released on time I would have had mine before the Superbowl.

Saw it in mini IMAX. Spectacular. My favorite film of 2018 by far! (note that i havent seen many of the others getting named at awards shows yet).

Its such a personal film. Gosling and Foy were so good in this. The personal challenges overcome to get to that moon landing all come to a head and i almost lost it in the theater.

The lunar IMAX scenes were so clean and pure.

best use of a score ive seen in a movie since Schindler's List. Its one hell of a score!

Cant wait to see it again in 4K at home.
