    The Front Runner (Blu-ray) review

American Senator Gary Hart's presidential campaign in 1988 is derailed when he's caught in a scandalous love affair.

Directed by Jason Reitman, THE FRONT RUNNER is based on the book “All the Truth Is Out” by Matt Bai and a screenplay by Matt Bai and Jay Carson and Jason Reitman. The film was produced by Right of Way Films, Jason Reitman and Helen Estabrook and BRON Studios along with Aaron L. Gilbert. Matt Bai, Jay Carson, Michael Beugg, Jason Blumenfeld, George Wolfe, Jason Cloth, Chris Conover and Edward Carpezzi are executive producers.

    My Thoughts
I was a freshman in college when the Gary Hart story broke in the news. I’d been a political junkie since the 1980 election when “my guy” won and it’s something I’ve followed ever since. For the most part, the press gave politicians a pass on their personal lives and frankly, we were better off as a society because of it. In the case of Hart, he dared the press to follow him, although in this case, the reporters from Miami didn’t know of that claim by Hart when they decided to stake out his condo based on an anonymous tip that he was having an affair.

My wife knew nothing of the story before sitting down to watch the film since she lived in Canada in 1988 and didn’t follow US politics, so I used her to gauge the entertainment value of the film. She ended up liking it a lot. First, it gave her some historical perspective on how we got to where we are today with our politics and it gave a glimpse into the inner workings of newspapers at the time.

The A/V presentation has a “vintage” look to it that captures the 1980s pretty well. The sets have excellent detail and Sony does its usual bang-up job with the presentation. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 score sounds great and utilized the entire array of speakers in the room (with Dolby Upmixing engaged).

    Video 4.5/5 (AVC)

    Audio 4.5/5 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

    Special Features:

    • Filmmaker Commentary
    • Featurette – “The Unmasking of a Candidate”
    • Three Deleted Scenes
    • Movies Anywhere Digital Copy

We’ve come a long way since the Gary Hart scandal of 1988. Hell, four years later Bill Clinton was elected with more baggage than Hart could ever dream about having and our current President has similar moral failings and the general public doesn’t seem to care much (unless you’re in the opposing party). It’s sad that our climate now has unsubstantiated accusations being brought up from 30 years earlier (Kavanaugh) or with the current Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 15 and 19 years ago, respectively. When will it stop? Who knows, but if you want to see a historically accurate depiction of a pivotal point in US politics, definitely check out this film. Jackman nails it in the lead role and it’s wildly entertaining. Highly recommended.
